Receiving blankets - what is a good size to make?

I bought a bunch of great flannel today to make recieving blakets as I was told the store bought ones are too small, especially if you have a big baby (they outgrow them quickly). I can not recall the size my coworker said though. I keep thinking a meter (39 inches) but I am not sure. Anyone else make their own? How big did you make yours? Thank you!!
